Your VIN is handled in this page’s temporary browser memory, not sent to our analytics. This site does not search recall records or generate a vehicle-safety result. The official lookup opens only when you choose to follow its link.
Your VIN and the clipboard
The form checks the VIN’s length and permitted characters in your browser. The VIN is displayed in the preparation and next-step dialogs. It is not submitted to this website’s server, added to the address bar, or stored in a browser profile by our front-end code.
The three text cards are a layout preview and have no click actions. This version does not read or write your clipboard or fetch replacement text. You can manually select the visible VIN and copy it using your browser. Your operating system may retain manually copied content according to its own settings.
First-party website analytics
Unless you opt out or your browser reports Do Not Track as enabled, the included site tools record page views and labeled button interactions. Events contain a generated browser identifier, the page route, the page title, an event label, a timestamp and, when available, the origin of the referring website.
Our analytics code does not include the VIN field value, full referring URLs, arbitrary URL parameters, raw IP addresses or geographic lookups. The browser identifier is pseudonymous: it is a random value, not your name or email address. It can distinguish repeat visits from the same browser.
The hosting provider may process connection information, including an IP address, in its own access and security logs. That is separate from the analytics records described here.
Storage and retention
The browser identifier is stored locally under site_tools_visitor until you clear site data or opt out. An analytics preference may be stored under site_tools_opt_out. No advertising cookies are created by this build.
Website analytics are stored on the website’s server. The reporting and event-retention window is set to 30 days. Old analytics events are removed when the next event is written; the operator can remove the data file sooner. Administrator login cookies are used only for the password-protected analytics dashboard.
External websites and email
Choosing the official lookup link opens NHTSA’s website. This build does not add your VIN to that link; you enter it directly on the external site. Its own privacy practices then apply.
The website does not load an external clipboard provider, location service, advertising script or web-font service. If you email us, the message and your sender address are handled through the respective email providers. Do not include sensitive information that is unnecessary for your question.
Your analytics choice
You can opt out of this site’s analytics in the current browser. A browser-reported Do Not Track setting also prevents our analytics events from being sent.
